Well hey there stranger!
Yeah I know, I’ve been totally MIA around here, and even more silent than usual on insta! I’ve been putting every spare ounce of time and energy into Mesa so I’m super sorry Squirrelly Minds has fallen by the wayside. BUT, I have a fun DIY for you today – a DIY Recycled Glass Pencil Holder from the book The Craft Kingdom.
If you know me at all, you know I love a good ‘ol repurposing/recycling DIY (evidence one, two and three). I also love a really simple DIY, so when I saw this super easy pencil holder by Eli Maor, I knew I wanted to make it. (Thanks Eli for sending me your book!)
The original DIY calls for just two materials. TWO – glasses/jars and hot glue. (I told you it was simple). It also calls for 6 glasses to make a pyramid, totally perfect for all those various pens and pencils and things. I stuck with a smaller version using just 3, and I put my own spin on it by adding some pink spray paint.

M A T E R I A L S
- 3 (or more in groups of 3) straight edged glasses or jars
- Hot glue gun
- Painters tape
- Spray paint
S T E P S
- First make sure your glasses are completely clean and dry. While not mandatory, if you are spray painting, you might want to give the interior a spritz and dry of alcohol or isopropanol for better adhesion.
- Cover the entire outside of the glass with painters tape. Spray paint the interior in 2-3 coats, making sure to coat as evenly as possible. Leave it to dry.
- When dry, remove the painters tape and clean the outside of the glass. Next, run a bead of hot glue along the side of a glass and press another glass beside it to make the base. Hold it together for a bit while the glue sets. Take your third glass and run two beads of glue on the side that will touch the base. Put into place and press while the glue dries.
Lastly, fill your new pyramid pencil holder with all your goodies!
If you want to take a shortcut, skip the spray painting and you’ll have this done in about 5 minutes. But I’m a colourful gal so I couldn’t resist!
The Craft Kingdom is full of great crafts like this one. I love how many of the crafts repurpose every day items – branched objects, conch shell frames, pebble magnets, even toilet paper roll art. Yes, it is possible.
