That fun, green, gold, and rainbow filled holiday is just a few weeks away now! So how about a little St Patrick’s Day craft for the kids?
This festive wand with its Shamrock top, gold streamers and rainbow coloured base will provide loads of crafting fun for your little leprechauns. Mind you, the hot glueing parts should be done by adults. Hot glue gun burns are no good.
An unexpected use for the shamrock wand? Well instead of a pinch, unsuspected passerbys not wearing green can get a little bop on the head! Plus, waving around a wand is just plain fun no matter what your age is, don’t you agree?
Materials
- Shamrock template (plus printer)
- Gold glitter cardstock
- Dowel stick
- Gold sequin trim or ribbon
- Markers
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Steps
1 Print off the shamrock template (or use any shamrock outline, including your own) either directly onto the back of your glitter cardstock, or onto plain cardstock to cut out and use as a template. Cut out two shamrocks from your gold glitter cardstock.
2 Take your dowel and measure out the spacing for the 7 colours of the rainbow, leaving about at least an inch margin for the top. My 12 inch long dowel worked out to each colour being 1.5 inches.
3 Use tape to mark off each section when colouring it in. Remember the colours of the rainbow are ROYGBIV – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.
4 Place a bead of hot glue on the top of the dowel then firmly press the end of your sequin trim or ribbon to adhere. Continue this all the way around.
5 If you’re using sequin trim, trim each strand a little longer than you need then pull off a few sequins. Tie the remaining thread into a knot to ensure the sequins don’t fall off.
6 Hot glue the backside of one shamrock onto the top of the dowel, making sure its centred.
7 Hot glue the other shamrock onto the other side. You’ll also want to apply glue on each leaf to have the two shamrocks sealed together.
8 Trim the shamrocks so they’re both the same shape.
Now give your wand a good swish and run off to have some leprechaun-worthy fun!
