You know those lame, plastic hats people wear around on St.Patrick’s Day? I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one of those. This mini top hat however? Well I was driving around town yesterday with it atop my head! It’s sparkly, cute, and mini. The trifecta of crafting perfection. And you can make your own! I’m sharing my cricut template (no this isn’t a sponsored post) but you can make this without the cutting machine. I highly advise you use the proper materials though – don’t try to make your own glitter card stock or is will fail greatly. Trust me. I tried.
Materials
- Green glitter cardstock
- Gold glitter tape
- Elastic chin strap
- Hot glue gun
- Cricut top hat template or scissors
Just an FYI, wearing this mini top hat may induce random posing and silly outbursts. This is completely normal.
Steps
1 Download the cricut top hat template and cut out. You will have one ‘donut’, one circle, and one strip with 4 tabs on each long side. If you don’t have a cricut, you can manually cut out two concentric circles (larger one with about an inch border) and an 8×1.5 inch strip with 4, 1/5 inch tabs cut out along each long edge.
2 Fold the tabs down going the opposite way on each side.
3 Roll the strip and slip it into the donut.
4 Place hot glue on each tab and press it against the underside of the hat. Make sure as you’re doing this that the strip isn’t rolled too tight. You want it to touch all the way around the inner circle of the donut.
5 Hot glue the strip together to form a cylinder.
6 Place hot glue on each tab on the opposite end. Carefully place the circle (sparkly side up) on top each tab, making sure everything lines up.
7 From the underside, slip one end of the chin strap through a crack between the tabs. Do this on the other side as well.
8 On both sides, tie a small knot to secure the chin strap in place.
9 To hide the chin strap and to make everything look a bit more cohesive, wrap a piece of gold glitter tape around the base of the hat. You can do one on the top as well if you’d like a bit of extra gold flair.
The best part about this DIY? You can tip your mini top hat at people and say in a chipper Irish accent “top ‘o the mornin’ to ya!”
I planned to take photos with my top hat in front of a graffiti’d wall that had rainbows all over it. Cause ya know, St.Patrick’s, leprechauns, rainbows. I was very sad when we drove by and the graffiti art was painted over. *sigh*
This rainbow coloured graffiti wall will do just fine in its place.
And don’t forget, if you have a cricut you can download the template:
