Her music was some of the first I learned to play on guitar and sing along with. Busting out her soulful lyrics with my guitar is one of my favourite ways to unwind.
Laura Beatrice Marling is an English folk musician from Eversley, Hampshire. From a musical family with a music teacher and recording studio owner for parents, Laura learned guitar at an early age. She moved to London when 16 years old and joined several acoustic instrumental groups. Her debut album, Alas I Cannot Swim, was released in 2008 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize (along with her second album, I Speak Because I Can, in 2010).

When I fall in love with a musician I don’t research them at all. I just listen to and enjoy the beautiful music they create. So when I first listened to Laura Marling I envisioned a Joni Mitchell type – maybe late 20’s, more likely early 30’s. A woman with a rich voice and a deeper history. Someone who has seen the world, known pain and anguish, yet still has a love for life that’s only possible by fully living it. So you can imagine my surprise when I learned Laura Marling was (at the time) only 22.
There is such a wisdom in her mature voice and lyrics unparalleled to anyone her age in the music industry. This girl is just getting started in life and she’s off to an amazing beginning. Just imagine the music she’ll create 20 years down the road after living a little more.
