Sweden started it. During my trip 3 years back I bought a juniper butter knife similar to this and another one like this with a matching cheese board. Since then I have developed a love and deep appreciation for all utensils and kitchenware made from wood.
There’s something about the simplicity and familiarity of wooden kitchenware that makes it so beautiful. It feels more accessible than silver spoons or ceramic bowls, perhaps because it feels like I too can make something just as beautiful with some clippings from my backyard. However I am clearly aware that if I tried to whittle a piece of log into a stunning spoon like the above artists, I would instead end up with something faintly resembling a chopstick. Or a marshmallow skewer.
At the very least, whenever I use my wooden knives, spoons or bowls, it feel as though I’m giving a simple nod to nature.
Thanks earth for bringing us such a beautiful and versatile resource.
And thank you artists who carve it into something we can both use and admire.
