I need to apologize for the lacklustre appearance of this little craft.
My life is just a tad insane at the moment.
I’ve had this craft for ages and do it with my students nearly every year. It’s sweet, meaningful and simple.
Sadly work and the new house has prevented me from creating a crisp new version and getting new photos for you, hence the above photo and below iphone snapshot. You can’t say I ain’t tryin’ right?

But I really do love this thanksgiving craft. It reminds kids what thanksgiving is all about and really makes them think about what they’re thankful for. Meanwhile they’re also out exploring and collecting leaves, allowing you to have conversations about different kinds of trees, leaves and their yearly cycle. Bam! Science and personal awareness all in one go.

If you can manage between family dinners, take some time with your child this (Canadian) thanksgiving weekend to explore under the trees, talk about what you’re both thankful for, and make something worth going up on the fridge.

Materials

• Large construction paper – any colour
• Brown construction paper
• Fall leaves coloured construction paper
• Black markers
• Scissors
• Glue
• Dried leaves

Steps

• Cut out a tree from brown construction paper and glue it onto another piece of differently coloured construction paper. At the top write “I’m thankful for” with a black marker.
• Cut leaves of various shapes and sizes from fall coloured construction paper.
• Ask your child what they are thankful for. It may require some probing and discussion. I usually deter responses like “video games” by asking “what could you not live without that you’re thankful for?”. Have your child write down each thing on a leaf and glue to your tree.
• Go outside and gather fallen leaves. Dry and glue onto your thankful tree
• Hang with pride on the fridge.
