Happy Monday! I hope you had a lovely and relaxing long weekend full of smiles and mini eggs. My weekend started off perfectly – a date with Joy of Frock Files. But yes, we still live thousands of miles apart.
A few weeks ago I brought this crazy idea to her:
Wanna hang out at our favourite cafe’s in our separate cities?
Joy and I got together on Friday, 3:30pm her time 12:30pm my time. Both our cafe’s were incredibly busy so chatting on g+ was hopeless. Instead we chatted on twitter and posted photos on instagram.
What’s the purpose of a long distance blog date?
- To spend time with a blogger friend I would love to hang out with.
- For us to share our favourite places in our own cities.
Even though we’re on separate coasts, making plans to hang out at similar places at the same time and chat over twitter made it feel a little bit like we were together at the same cafe in the same city. It was tons of fun hanging out with Joy and it made me wish (not for the first time!) we lived closer. Maybe one day! (Portland Joy?).
Search the hashtag #longdistanceblogdate to read our conversation about Alt (and the chatty man sitting next to me) and see our photos.
Where did I choose to have my long distance blog date with Joy? At my favourite neighbourhood cafe, Spiral. From my home, Spiral Cafe is a 5 minute walk through cherry blossoming paths and parks. It’s a staple in the neighbourhood, set in an historic building across from a large park and scenic inlet. What I love most about Spiral cafe is how it feels like having coffee in a friends’ living room.
The walls are filled with art, photographs and children’s drawings, the tables and chairs are worn and mismatched, a pile of games and toys keep kids and kid like adults entertained, and in many evenings live music envelops the room.
Lastly and most importantly, the coffee, treats, and smiling staff make the place all the more welcoming, and all the more like I’m hanging out in my friends’ living room.
P.S. I have one thing I must admit that I have kept to myself for years: it takes all my will power not to play that beautiful old piano with its ivory stripped keys while I wait in line for my coffee:
Thank you so much Joy for joining me on the first Long Distance Blog Date! Head over to Frock Files to see Joy’s favourite coffee shop.

It’s so cool to see what this cafe looks like after “hanging out” with you there! What a cozy, fun place. I hope that we’ll get to have a real life hangout sometime soon.

This cafe looks right up my alley – plenty of personality and quirk to it! And I love cafe’s that have games in them – so inviting.
I love that you guys had a long distance blog date – such a wonderful idea!

So cute, Tan! This is an awesome idea. It’s amazing that with today’s technology we’re able to “hang out” with our friends across the continent 🙂

What a fun idea! Joy is actually coming to Portland soon if you wanted to make a return trip… hint hint. 😀 That cafe looks lovely. I didn’t know you could play the piano! My girls just started playing… they’ve only had a few lessons, but they love it!
