When pregnant with original squirrelly babe, we didn’t find out the sex. It was really fun not knowing until that very last moment, after your body has undergone this gruelling and beautiful feat, ending with this incredible tiny person in your arms. Well this time we wanted a different experience, so we gathered our family and closest friends for an outdoor autumn brunch gender reveal by lighting off some smoke bombs.
Warning, there’s a lot of brunch talk, so if you’re eager to know, scroll down to find out if those smoke bombs went off blue or pink.
Our brunch was Thanksgiving morning (I’m in Canada) in my parents’ backyard, the same place we got married. Two long tables sat in the field with old school desk chairs lined with sheep skin and blankets. We decorated the tabletop with floral cuttings from the property, white pumpkins, and pears (to honour the babe we’ve nicknamed little pear). My mum had pink and blue china, so we used both for a subtle touch of gender cliche colours.
We kept the brunch menu simple: slow cooked overnight steel cut oats with a myriad of toppings, cut fruit, and these orange cardamom cinnamon buns. (They’re my absolute favourite and make it out to every special brunch occasion.) And of course, there was plenty of coffee flowing all around (though sadly only one cup for me…sigh).
We wanted to use smoke bombs for the reveal, but also wanted to be surprised along with everyone else. So I trusted my bestie to pick up the results, buy the smoke bombs and cover them up so no one would know until we pulled those tabs. As you can tell from my face, I was a little afraid of these things blowing up in my hand. But thankfully my hand is intact and it was SUCH a fun way to find out what we’re having. Are you ready?
Yep! It’s a GIRL!!!!!!!
We are pretty darn tootin’ excited over here! It’ll be so fun to raise a boy and girl together, plus I can’t lie, I’m thrilled about clothes shopping…
OG Squirrelly Babe is super excited too. Every day he wants to cuddle with mama’s tummy and says “hi baby! hi baby sister!”. I mean seriously, can my heart melt any more?
We can’t wait to meet you our squirrelly baby girl!
