There’s a thrill you get only when you pull the end of a Christmas cracker. You always know you’ll get your tissue paper crown, bad joke and a useless toy, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun.
Why not make your own christmas cracker and fill it with delightful goodies? It’s easier than you think.
Materials
Per christmas cracker
- toilet paper roll
- 1/2 sheet of tissue paper
- goodies to fill
- ribbon
- Christmas cracker strips
- double sided tape
- exacto knife
- scissors
Steps
1 With an exacto knife, cut your toilet paper roll in half
2 Place a piece of double sided tape along the outside edge of each roll.
3 Cut your 1/2 sheet of tissue paper in half. Set one half aside for later, then cut the other half into halves again. Adhere each half onto the end of the roll to make handles. You can wrap the tissue paper around a few times to get multi layers, but you’ll have to make sure it’s taped down.
4 Place double sided tape in the same spot on the toilet paper rolls but on top of the tissue paper.
5 Tape the half you cut before onto the centre of the toilet paper roll. If you’re using a patterned tissue paper like I did, you’ll want to make sure they align.
6 Place a christmas cracker strip in the roll, then tie one end with your ribbon. Fill the roll with your goodies, then seal the other end with ribbon.
*If you’re wondering “Tanya…why the heck are you using three pieces of tissue paper?” then let me answer. I originally wrapped the roll all in one piece of tissue paper, but every time I tried to snap the cracker it would break off at the ribbon and not in the centre. By giving it a little extra support (the double sided tape on the edge) and having a weak centre (split toilet paper roll and only one sheet of tissue paper) it ensures the cracker will break in the centre, as it should.
How sweet would it be to personalize the goodies for your guests? You could take it a step further and give each person a little gift inside, then attach their name to the outside of the cracker and use it as the table setting. Bam! 3 in 1!
