I always meant to write a post on our home, but never got around to it. I think partly I didn’t think it was good enough. It’s certainly not a very inspiring space, and it’s so cramped and, most of the time, messy. But I figured, since we’re moving and all to our first house, that it was about time.
Welcome to our first home together, and (most likely) our last rental.
Notes about the space:
- We live in a 1910 character house divided into three suites. Ours is on the main level
- We painted shortly after moving in and have always hated the blue walls – they were not the same as the paint chip (we will be painting samples on the walls at the house!). We never got around to repainting because it’s been nearly that long since we started house hunting. We figured “we’re moving soon anyway so why bother repainting?”. ….over two years later it’s still there.
- The suite is essentially a narrow strip that houses the living room, dining room and kitchen, with the bathroom and bedroom off the dining area
- We also have a massive deck and garden. That was a huge draw to this place
As this was our first home we lived in when we were just dating, we were still figuring out our styles, and how to combine them. What I’m looking forward to most in our new home is creating a flow and completely customizing it to our style.
I’ll be really sad to leave this place and the neighbourhood (5 minute walk to the ocean people!) but even with the perks, nothing will beat having a home of our own.
You’ve been good to us rental suite. Time to move on!
On a side note, I’m over at Wayfair today showing you how to have an eco-friendly lunch! (good bye plastic bags). Come on over and get green with me!

I love the quilt! Hope the move goes well!

Thank you! It was a wedding gift and I LOVE it, but hidden needles have stabbed me far too many times 🙁

I totally relate to the paint situation! Although in our case it’s that we decided not to bother messing with the renter’s white kitchen which has painted grey cabinets. And we just signed our lease for the fourth year in our rental house!
I do love the color of your kitchen, that yellow is super fun. We’re planning on a terra cotta colored kitchen whenever we finally buy.

The kitchen yellow is my absolute faves! We call it healthy egg yolk.
Will your landlord let you paint? It makes such a difference

Don’t feel uncomfortable about your first space! I think it’s sweet, and gives great insight into a fresh new beginning.
Tan says
Aww thanks for the sweet words Emma! I do really love things about this place, I guess I just feel like we’ve outgrown it. Definitely great insight to a new beginning!

It looks like you made it your home, and that makes it special.
Tan says
Thanks Jessica! We sure did <3

What a sweet home! I love that bay window and that unique cabinet… I still remember when you bought it!
Tan says
It was a big event! I still love that cabinet just as much
